After losing his mum to COPD, Terence promised to stop smoking! Congratulations to Terence who has successfully quit after smoking for over 30 years.

What was your main reason for accessing the service?

My mum passed away with COPD and I promised her I'm going to stop smoking - I didn't want to break my promise. Also wanted to save money as it cost me £70-80 per week, and it allowed me to spend it on other things. I have been smoking for over 30 years so I have been smoking for a long time.

Did you believe you could achieve 4 weeks smokefree?

I was struggling at first, but I started on the patches and the mouth spray however after a discussion with my advisor I mentioned that the spray is not for me and I switched to the inhalator which has worked really well to control my cravings.

How helpful did you find using stop smoking medication?

I don't think I could have done it without it and just with will power - I thought at first that the patches weren't important, but they are when it comes to smoking.

Apart from medication, what else helped you to quit and stay smokefree?

Keeping in touch with my advisor has been great and very useful.

Did you visit the Yorkshire Smokefree Webpage?

No but I have been using social media to engage with other ex-smokers which I have found really encouraging.

Has your health improved since you quit and if so, in what ways?

It has improved my breathing as I suffer with COPD. I believe my blood has also improved which was sky high before and now it's not.

Other than health, have you achieved anything since quitting that you couldn't do whilst smoking?

I have saved money, my breathing improved and my clothes don't smell of smoke anymore!

Has the current lockdown helped with your quit or has this has made quitting harder?

I don't really go out, so the telephone service has been really good. My leisure time is usually at home and staying home has helped me to keep myself busy and away from smoking.

What have you found helpful accessing the service via the Telephone?

I don't really go out, so a telepehone service has been really helpful. My advisor has been very encouraging over the phone.
