The team at our Yorkshire Smokefree would live to say a big farewell to Becky, who has been delivering stop smoking support and advice to her patients at Kingswell Surgery, Penistone, for as far back as she can remember!
We popped in for a quick chat and here's what she had to tell us about her experience and what she's looking forward to in retirement...
"I started at Kingswell Surgery in 2004. Stop Smoking was one of the first training sessions I attended at Hilder House and I loved it. Back then we had a lot of patients who smoked and wanting help to quit locally. We are one of the furthest surgeries from town and getting into Barnsley can be tricky. It enabled our patients to get support easily.
I always felt that supporting people in their journey was just a job but recently since I announced my retirement, I have had several patients thank me for my help. One used the phrase "you saved my life 15 years ago by helping me to quit". I had not realised the impact it had made and I felt extremely proud of that, if not quite emotional.
Spending 12 weeks with a patient creates a bond and trust that enables them to feel that they can be honest and often share their life experiences that took them to smoking, whether it be for an illness, for their family or financial reasons. I do remember one of my patients buying a pair of Italian leather riding boots with the money she had saved, that was amazing for her. I am extremely privileged to be part of that.
The advice I would give to someone thinking of quitting is use the support offered. It is much easier now with online and telephone support and the team in Barnsley are amazing. It is so much easier when you have an advisor at the end of the phone or in person to support you in your journey and ensure you are using the correct products.
My retirement from the NHS and primary care starts on 3rd July but I will continue to run my mobile ear syringing business, I have been doing both now for over 3 years but the time is right for me to concentrate on that.
We have also bought a touring caravan which we have been trying out locally but are planning longer trips this Summer. I'm also looking forward to spending more time with my recently retired husband and grand children.
Becky, you've been a wonderful colleague and friend to the team. We wish you all the best what we hope will be a long, happy and healthy retirement! Keep in touch, you will be missed!
