Barnsley residents trying to kick the habit this Stoptober can now earn real rewards for doing it.

BetterPoints Barnsley has launched a brand-new smoking cessation module. It's part of the free rewards app already used by residents across Barnsley to stay active and healthy. The app launched in June and residents are already earning points and prizes for moving more.

The timing couldn't be better. Stoptober, the nation's biggest stop smoking campaign, kicks off on 1 October. And this year, Barnsley quitters have extra reason to stick with it. Smokers who successfully quit and stay smoke-free for four weeks can earn up to £50 in rewards.

Here's how it works. Sign up to the Yorkshire Smokefree Barnsley stop smoking service. Download the app and then unlock rewards through the quitting process on the BetterPoints app at each step:

  • Sign up to get support
  • Set a quit date
  • Stop smoking
  • Stay smoke-free for four weeks

Points can be swapped for local and national rewards including high street vouchers and Barnsley Gift Cards. There’s no catch, just support, plus a little extra motivation.

Quitting alone is tough. Quitting with support is five times more likely to work. BetterPoints Barnsley wants to make sure nobody has to do it on their own.

Amanda Longdon, Service Manager at Yorkshire Smokefree Barnsley, said:

"Stopping smoking is one of the best things people can do for their health, and with the expert support available through Yorkshire Smokefree Barnsley, we're delighted to work with BetterPoints Barnsley to provide an extra incentive for people to quit this Stoptober.

Whether you're making your first attempt or trying again, every step towards becoming smokefree is a positive one. Yorkshire Smokefree Barnsley offers free NHS support tailored to individual needs, helping people quit with confidence. Choose online, telephone or face-to-face support and take the first step today. We're here to help people achieve lasting improvements to their health and wellbeing."

Ryan Lewis, Programme Manager at BetterPoints Barnsley, added:

“Quitting smoking is one of the biggest things someone can do for their health. We want to make sure that effort gets recognised. We’re proud to be working alongside the Trust to help people quit as well as improve their health by getting active.”

Residents can download the free BetterPoints app now and get started ahead of Stoptober.

BetterPoints Barnsley is a free rewards app run in partnership with Barnsley Council and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, supporting residents across all six of Barnsley's Area Councils to get active and improve their health and wellbeing.

Residents record activity such as walking, wheeling and cycling, along with healthy choices like taking part in local challenges and events, and earn points for doing so. Points can be swapped for a range of local and national rewards. There are also weekly, monthly and bi-monthly prize draws to win Barnsley Gift Cards.

Download the app on Google Play and the Apple Store.
